Cernobbio on Lake Como

Lake Como is perhaps the most famous of the Italian lakes and some say the most beautiful. Cernobbio lies on the south west shore of the west leg of the lake and is an ideal location from which to explore the golf clubs of the region and indeed all its attractions. Menaggio golf club is to the north of Cernobbio along the lake and a golf course hard to beat for sheer spectacular mountain scenery as well as being delightfully tricky. We would highly recommend it be included in any Lake Como golfing trip. Cernobbio has excellent communication links to all of our selected golf courses and is itself one of the most beautiful lakeside towns where a very popular pastime is to stroll along the boardwalk watching the boats whilst taking in the stunning scenery.

Staying in Cernobbio

The hotels we have selected are centrally located and within a short stroll of an excellent choice of restaurants, cafes and shops all offering a very high standard of hospitality. This is both an area of outstanding natural beauty and a very elegant popular retreat for visitors from all over the world. There is much to see and do locally between your rounds of golf, such as a guided sightseeing boat trip around the lake, museums or galleries or perhaps the favourite pastime of all, shopping. Milan is a great day trip for the more adventurous or visit Verona for an evening at the Opera. We will be delighted to help plan and book any of these activities which are additional to your golfing itinerary. When considering which of our three Italian Lakes Golfing Experiences to choose between, please visit our how to get there page on this website for more specific information on flights from the UK and transfer times from local airports to Cernobbio.

Hotel Villa d'Este

The opulent five star Hotel Villa d'Este is a former 16th century residence set on the shores of Lake Como in Cernobbio and still considered to be one of the most exclusive hotels in the world. It was built in 1568 as the summer residence of Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio. A great draw to Europe's rich and famous, it has welcomed Napoleon and the Duchess of Windsor as well as such other luminaries as Mark Twain, Clark Gable and more lately Mel Gibson, Jose Carreras and Madonna.

Grand Hotel Imperiale

The Grand Imperiale Hotel is an historic four star establishment resting on the water’s edge with serene views of Lake Como and Mount Bisbino. It is situated in Moltrasio on the "romantic coast of Como" and just a short distance from Cernobbio. The hotel has many luxurious features such as a modern indoor pool, sauna, spa, tennis court, outdoor pool and sun terrace. The exclusive restaurant, Ristorante Imperialino, sits amongst the scented Mediterranean gardens overlooking the lake and at night the sparkling lights reflecting from across the water give it a magical and romantic air.

Hotel Miralago

Hotel Miralago is a fully refurbished 4 star hotel situated in a charming position overlooking Lake Como. It has forty elegant air-conditioned rooms and a restaurant with outstanding views of the lake which also has an excellent value a la carte menu of local specialities and Italian favourites as well as international offerings. It is perhaps an ideal choice for your first evening meal, which we can book for you. With very friendly and accommodating staff, the bar of the hotel is a relaxing space where you can enjoy a coffee or a drink whilst reflecting on, or indeed anticipating, your golfing day.

Hotel Villa Flori

Directly overlooking Lake Como in one of the most picturesque spots imaginable is the four star Hotel Villa Flori. It was built in the 19th century as the private residence of the nobleman Marchese Raimondi. It was also the venue of the short-lived marriage of his daughter to the hero of Italian unification, General Giuseppe Garibaldi. In 1958 the villa was transformed into a hotel with further modernisations in 2011. It retains all the charm and atmosphere of the original building.

Hotel Terzo Crotto

Hotel Terzo Crotto is set back from the lakeside in a quiet location surrounded by shrubs and woodland and yet just 400 metres from the lake shore. It is a delightfully simple family run hotel which offers genuine hospitality. There are just nine rooms with simple decor and good ensuite facilities. The dining room and restaurant provide excellent breakfasts and delicious evening meals. Although quiet, the hotel is only a few minutes’ walk to the centre of Cernobbio with all the restaurants, bars, cafes and sights and sounds of this pretty little town.

Circolo Golf Villa D'Este

Circollo Golf also known as Montourfano Golf, was established in 1926 and has since been visited over the years by the Kings and Queens of Europe. This 6,268 yard par 69 course, designed by Englishman Peter Gannon, is rated by many as one of the finest in Italy and has in past years hosted the Italian Open along with the Italian Ladies Amateur Golf championship on no less than thirty nine occasions. This timeless classic is best described as a sensational woodland course with generous fairways all overseen by the magnificently stylish and very palatial clubhouse. A real joy.

Bergamo L'Albenza Golf Club

Bergamo Golf Club was opened in 1961 and is an 18 hole course designed by Messrs. Cotton and Sutton with a further 9 holes added in 1987. The course is set in the Bergamo Alps south of Lake Como and not far from where Pellegrino spring water comes from. The primary 18 holes, the "blue and yellow" combination, is a 6,636 yard par 72 course which in 1996 hosted the Italian Open. The equally as good "red” 9 holes is an excellent layout and boasts some of the most spectacular views in the area. It is probably best to play all 27 holes for a complete Bergamo L'Albenza experience!

Menaggio & Cadenabbia Golf Club

The second oldest golf course in Italy, the Menaggio and Cadenabbia club provides visitors with the prettiest and trickiest 5,998 yard par 70 course you are ever likely to encounter anywhere in the world. Originally founded by four English gentleman who first met in 1907, the course was extended to 18 holes in 1919 and then completely redesigned in 1965 by John Harris. The course remains to this day imbued with considerable English charm and style which extends to the library of leather bound golf tomes in the original clubhouse.

Barlassina Country Club

This may be the finest parkland course in northern Italy designed by Englishman John Morrison. Its peaceful and rural setting amongst the woodlands of central Lombardy provides you with a perfect golfing experience. It was founded in 1956 by a group of wealthy Italians wishing to escape to the peace and tranquillity of the countryside. The excellent 6,777 yard par 72 course offers golfing visitors gently undulating and occasionally doglegged fairways which pick their way through avenues of mature trees.

Golf Club Carimate

Golf Club Carimate is located in the peaceful and relaxing rolling countryside of Brianza in the province of Como and in 2012 celebrated its 50th anniversary. Just 27 kilometres from Milan it is only a short journey from the grand prix racing circuit of Monza. Carimate is not unlike the famous Wentworth course in Surrey in its setting amongst the secluded residential property. The gentle dog-legs of the front 9 head out into the mature woodland estates beyond and provide a very pleasant golfing experience for the visitor.

Le Robinie Golf Club

Very unique in style among golf courses in this part of Italy, Le Robinie is the only course in the region designed by the legendary Jack Nicklaus Snr. With its wide fairways and artificially constructed landscapes which create delightful amphitheatres around many holes, along with extensive water and sand hazards, it offers the visitor an experience of US Tournament Players Club style golf right here in the heart of Lombardy.

Golf Club La Pinetina

Golf club La Pinetina is a 6,397 yard par 71 course set in seventy hectares of majestic countryside. Founded in 1971 and located in Brianza just twelve miles South of Como and eighteen miles north of Milan, this John Harris and Gianni Albertini designed course is known for its Scotch pine, larch, oak and chestnut woods with wildlife from hawks to hares roaming the estate. Remember, you can get a free drop from a rabbit scraping

Golf Club Lecco

Close to the smaller Lake Pinsano and Lake Annone and nestling in the heart of the Brianza countryside at the foot of the Lombardian Alps you will find the delightful Golf Club Lecco. This is the place to come for a quiet and relaxing 18 holes where the views of Mounts Grigne and Resegone are simply stunning and where you can enjoy excellent cuisine at the 19th hole. The Lecco course is a modest 6,202 yard par 71 on mostly level fairways laid out in a forgiving design with some cheeky water hazards around several greens.

Golf Club Monticello

Golf club Monticello is in Cassina Rizzardi which sits on the plains nine miles south east of your base at Cernobbio and within a large piece of real estate ideally suited to hosting two fine 18 hole championship courses, the "rosso" and the "blu". The courses were constructed in 1974 and are presented at a very high standard which with the addition of superb greens are a real pleasure to play. The courses are only forty minutes from Milan and have a thriving membership which enjoy its excellent terraced restaurant facilities overlooking the double 9th/18th green. Monticello has now hosted a total of seven Italian Opens.
