Finiding that special course that makes you say 'Wow' when you sink your last putt on the 18th is hard to come by these days. Most of us have seen the big names venues on TV, and it can sometimes almost feel that you've even played the course yourself. Well, unless you have experienced Donegal and what it has to offer in terms of truely amazing links golf, then you really haven't lived...

Ballyliffin Golf Club is home to the most northerly located courses within Ireland. It is slightly ironic, considering Ballyliffin is in Southern Ireland. Both the Sir Nick Faldo designed Old Course and the Glashedy Links are truely great courses and will not disappoint any golfer. Probably why Rory McIlroy andDarren Clarke are regular visitors to play.

Rosapenna Golf Resort, next to Downings in Sheephaven Bay is Eurpoe's largest links golf resort, and a favouite of the 2010 US Open Champion Graeme McDowell. In addition to the existing 2 Championship 18 hole courses of Old Tom Morris and Sandy Hills and a small 9 hole course, the resort owners recently purchased the Eddie Hackett designed Maheramagorgan course. Joanne O'Haire, Royal County Down Golf Club's assistant professional designed the Tra Mor course, which has also been purchased by the owners of Rosapenna. This gives them an offering of 81 holes in their north west location.

It is easy to see the quality of the courses in their ranking of the 2013 Golf Digest Ireland top 100 golf courses lists: Ballyliffin Glashedy (12th), Enniscrone (13th), Donegal Murvagh (18th), Ballyliffin Old (21st), Rosapenna Sandy Hills (28th), Rosapenna Old Tom Morris (34th)and Narin & Portnoo (38th).

Ruddy cherishes Glashedy as his own and has returned in recent years to fine tune the stunning bunkering of this magnificient links. Rosapenna Links

In 1891, while a guest of Lord Leitrim at his nearby estate, Old Tom Morris of St. Andrews, a winner of four British Opens in the 1860’s, took a drive to enjoy the Donegal scenery. Morris was quick to see the golfing potential of this fine stretch of Donegal coast line and before returning to the home of golf he had staked-out the first Rosapenna Links, incorporating wide rolling fairways amidst the undulating terrain and of course those delightful greens. Back at St. Andrews, Old Tom was quick to tell of his discovery and so it was that Rosapenna became a place of pilgrimage for golfers at the turn of the century. Amongst those to follow were two other great golfing champions Harry Vardon and James Braid who won 11 British Open titles between them. They added length and more detailed bunkering but were wise enough to leave those wonderful natural greens. In September 2009 the new Strand Nine opened at Rosapenna to replace the original back nine which played across the main road on a number of holes. These new links holes which are now played as the front nine are routed through the low lying dunes to the east of the Sandy Hills and are fashioned much like the original Old Tom Morris Valley nine that runs along the beautiful Tramore beach overlooking Sheephaven Bay which have now become the back nine. Laid out by Pat Ruddy of the European Club these new links holes, which have striking views across Mulroy Bay, have matured to a condition that has seen them settle into the Old Tom Morris Links to provide a seamless connection between each nine
